What happens when humans kill the boldest and most aggressive individuals in a predator population for thousands of years? Brown bears in central Italy suggest that this causes genetic changes reminiscent of early stages of domestication. The consequence is that at least the last remnants of the former bear population in the Apennines and humans can live side by side in comparative harmony.
