An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 hit the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan early Friday morning local time. This was announced by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), reports TASR with reference to the Reuters agency.
The earthquake occurred at 06:39 CET at a depth of about ten kilometers. Its epicenter was located at a distance of 61 kilometers from the city of Kunduz. The tremors were also felt in the capital Kabul and the surrounding areas. Reports of casualties or damage were not immediately available.
In early November, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit several northern Afghan provinces, at least 27 people lost their lives and 956 were injured. In late August, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 2,200 and injuring around 4,000. Earthquakes are frequent in Afghanistan, especially in the Hindu Kush region, which lies in a highly active seismic zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
