Chung-shan began attacking random passers-by with a knife

A suspect in his 20s set off smoke grenades at an exit from Taipei Main Station, sparking panic. Subsequently, at the nearby Chung-shan station, he began attacking random passers-by with a knife, the police said.

Local media reported that the man was wanted and, according to reports, the police chased him to the roof of the building, from which he apparently jumped himself in an attempt to escape arrest. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Investigators are trying to find out the motive of the perpetrator

Premier Chuo Zhongtai announced that authorities immediately stepped up security measures across the country, including at railway stations and airports. According to him, the investigators are trying, among other things, to find out the motive of the perpetrator.

In Taiwan, similar violent crimes are rare, AFP wrote, adding that in 2014 the public was shocked by the attack of a man in the Taipei subway, where he stabbed four people. The perpetrator was executed after his conviction in 2016.
