Donald Trump signed a decree reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug

Several US states have approved their own programs regarding the legalization of medical marijuana.

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he signed an executive order changing the classification of marijuana to a less dangerous drug.

“Today, I am pleased to announce that I will sign an executive order that will move marijuana from Class I to Class III prohibited substances with legitimate medical use,” he announced in the Oval Office. He clarified that this is not about the legalization of marijuana and in no case does he approve of its use for recreational purposes.

Change of classification

“I always told my kids not to do drugs, not to drink, not to smoke and stay away from drugs,” he continued. The US president said a few days ago that “a lot of people would like this reclassification because it leads to an enormous amount of research that cannot be done without reclassification.”

Marijuana is currently a Class I prohibited substance, just like heroin or LSD. The United States considers these substances to be drugs with a high potential for abuse with no possible medical use.

Terms in the US

Class III substances such as ketamine or anabolic steroids, on the other hand, are considered drugs with a lower potential for abuse and with some medical use. Several US states have approved their own programs regarding the legalization of medical marijuana.
