Motta evaluates the legislative year as one of the ‘most difficult in history’ and defends independence between Powers

The president of , , carried out, this Friday (19), a review of legislative activities during a “Coffee with Journalists”. In a conciliatory tone, but recognizing the seriousness of the political scenario, Motta classified the recent period as one of the “most difficult moments in the history of the legislature”, citing the polarization and interference of judgments from the Federal Supreme Court () in the daily life of the House.

Despite the difficulties, the parliamentarian highlighted the positive balance in the approval of matters, with emphasis on the government’s economic agenda and public security.

Relationship between the Powers and STF

Motta reinforced the need for mutual respect and independence between the Powers. Regarding the relationship with the Executive, he stated that he maintains “deep respect” for President Luiz Inácio da Silva, despite possible natural fluctuations in politics. Regarding , he highlighted friendship with as a positive point for governance towards 2026.

When addressing the operations of the parliamentarians and the relationship with the Judiciary, the president of the Chamber adopted caution. “I don’t pre-judge in advance on any subject. I think the Supreme Court has the role of investigating,” said Motta, highlighting that the House will continue to discuss issues inherent to the legislation, without giving up its prerogatives.

He also pointed out that the trial of a former president in the STF is a factor that “interferes in the day-to-day life of the Chamber”.

Tension in the Chamber and press

One of the central points of the conversation was the episode involving the deputy and the actions of the Legislative Police, which resulted in difficulties for the work of the press. Motta apologized to journalists for the “excesses that occurred”, making a commitment that such situations will not happen again.

However, he defended the decision taken at the time to guarantee the functioning of the House. “The only thing left for the president to do was make the decision (…) to protect the proper functioning of the House”, he explained, attributing the tense atmosphere to radicalized polarization.

Regarding the opposition’s occupation of the Board of Directors, Motta informed that the case is under analysis by the Ethics Council and awaits a “pedagogical” decision to punish those involved.

Agendas: Economy, Security and Amnesty

The President of the Chamber listed legislative advances, such as the commitment to literate children and the prioritization of public safety. About future and controversial topics:

Dosimetry PL (January 8): Motta clarified that the Chamber did not approve a broad amnesty, but rather the possibility of judicial review of sentences considered excessive. “It is the judiciary itself that will analyze these requests”, he stressed;

Political scenario for 2026

Asked about the 2026 elections and the movement of candidates such as , Motta defended a stance of impartiality in the conduct of the Chamber. “The less politicized it is from an electoral point of view [minha posição] whatever, the better”, he stated, indicating that explicit support for opposing sides would harm the balance necessary to preside over the sessions.

Motta also briefly commented on the revocation of his mandate, stating objectively that the decision was made for regulatory reasons: “He already had the necessary absences for his revocation to be requested.”

At the end, the president minimized criticism made by the former president of the House, reaffirming his friendship and suggesting that statements may have been taken out of context.
