Lídia Jorge won the Pessoa 2025 Prize last week. The writer is the first female narrator to be awarded the prize.
Lídia Jorge learned that she had been the winner of the 39th edition of the Pessoa Prize one day after receiving her Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of the Azores.
“It was a total surprise, an award that was not on my horizon. Literature occupies a space among many others”, confessed the narrator to SIC.
“This December 10, 2025, will forever remain in my life as a moment of great happiness. I only wish all the people in life that they can have a day like this”, he admitted.
The Portuguese writer believes that awards help build trust.
He began his literary career 45 years agowhen he launched “O Dia dos Prodígios” and, since then, he has published novels, short stories, essays, chronicles and poetry.
The work of Lídia Jorge is translated into more than 20 languages. The most recent book is “Misericordia”, from 2022.
