Investigators have already identified a third party involved in the crime; the 13 engravings by Matisse and Portinari remain missing
Police arrested the second man involved in the theft of works of art from the Mário de Andrade Library in early December. He was temporarily detained by the 1st Specialized Center for the Repression of Crimes and Miscellaneous Occurrences (Siege). Authorities have also identified a third suspect and are working to locate him.
Felipe dos Santos Fernandes Quadra, the first to be captured, has been in prison since the day after the crime. Like his partners, Quadra was also identified by the library cameras and others operating in the center of São Paulo.
To date, the works have not been recovered.
Invasion
On Sunday, the 7th, the criminals took eight engravings by Matisse and five by Portinari. The works were part of the exhibition From Book to Museum: MAM São Paulo and Biblioteca Mário de Andrade. They captured a security guard and also a couple who were visiting the place. It was the last day of the event.
Quadra and his partner acted quickly, picked up the pieces and placed them in bags. Immediately, they walked out the front door of the library.
The city of São Paulo called Interpol, the international police, to prevent the pieces from being sold abroad.
