This Friday, December 19th, the Social Security Institute will pay the Regional Pension Supplement, support aimed at pensioners residing in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The installment is part of the monthly payment calendar published at the beginning of the month and appears as a financial reinforcement aimed at mitigating the increased costs associated with insularity.

According to official information, this supplement is granted to low-income pensioners residing in the Azores, functioning as an addition to the pensions already received. The payment occurs at a time when many beneficiaries are also awaiting other support and social benefits typical of the month of December.

What is the Regional Pension Supplement

According to Social Security, the Regional Pension Supplement is an additional benefit granted to pensioners residing in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with the aim of compensating for specific charges resulting from island status. This is a benefit of a regional nature, distinct from pensions granted at national level.

According to the same source, this supplement is intended exclusively for pensioners with low incomes, functioning as a mechanism to reinforce available monthly income. The measure seeks to mitigate inequalities associated with the cost of living on the islands, particularly in areas such as transport, essential goods and services.

Who is entitled to receive

According to information available on the Social Security website, pensioners residing in the Autonomous Region of the Azores who meet the income criteria defined by current regional legislation are entitled to the Regional Pension Supplement.

As explained by the organization, support is awarded based on income levels, with the value of the supplement adjusted to the economic situation of each beneficiary. The objective is to ensure that support reaches especially those who are most financially vulnerable.

Notícias ao Minuto reminds us that this supplement is not automatic for all pensioners, as it is necessary to comply with legal requirements and actually reside in the region.

How it is calculated and when it is paid

Social Security clarifies that the Regional Pension Supplement is calculated based on income brackets and paid in 14 annual monthly installments. Of these, two are paid in July and two in December, following the model applied to various pensions and social benefits.

According to the same source, the legal regime for this support was initially established by Regional Legislative Decree no. 2/2000/A, of January 12, and was later revoked and updated by Regional Legislative Decree no. 8/2002/A, of April 10, which establishes the framework currently in force.

The complement has been updated annually within the scope of the Budget of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, following the evolution of regional social policies.

Where and how the order is placed

As Social Security explains, the Regional Pension Supplement must be requested from the Azores Social Security Institute, IPRA, as well as through the Integrated Citizen Support Network. The request can be made in person, requiring the presentation of documentation proving the pensioner’s situation.

According to the publication cited by , beneficiaries must ensure that their data is up to date to avoid delays or payment failures.

December still brings other support to receive

With the month of December halfway through, Social Security reminds us that the payment of various social benefits continues. Every month an official calendar is published with the scheduled dates for each support, available on the organization’s website.

According to Social Security, this calendar allows beneficiaries to monitor payments in advance, avoiding uncertainty at a time of year marked by greater family expenses.
