“The craziest wave on the planet”
A group of adventurous Australians captured images of an extraordinary ocean phenomenon: a place where four 3.7 meter waves regularly converge into an oval depression, resulting in an aquatic explosion.
The sequence of mind-blowing videos was captured by Chris White e Ben Allenduring the filming of Tension 11, an independent bodyboarding film released last Sunday, on YouTube.
“The first time I saw the wave I wasn’t filming it, I just had the camera. We were exploring the waves and we ended up there by chance… At the time I thought it was just two waves hitting each other. Everywhere I posted it, people thought it was fake, because it looks like it was mirrored. And then it explodes… I’ve always been curious: Does this happen whenever the swell is big?” asked White, à .

White returned to the location more or less by memory, on the sidelines of the new film, for which the team collected a significant amount of footage of this unique oceanic phenomenon happening over and over again.
It’s not about two waves converging…
New Atlas describes it as “a phenomenon that should not exist” and explains it: “what you see are two giant waves colliding with two smaller ones that retreat from the coast, simultaneously diving into an opening left by hydrodynamic forces on a reef close to the surface, causing an enormous volume of water to shoot into the sky as if a depth charge had exploded beneath the waves”.
The Tension team didn’t reveal where they saw the phenomenon, but they admit to going back there: “I want to go back there so bad, but at the same time, I don’t want to kill someone. It’s scary to think what could happen,” said White.
The two adventurous friends agree that some of their board surfing accomplices would have difficulty resisting the idea of standing on top of the depression, waiting to be launched into the sky.
