In a letter sent to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday (19), the European Union leaders reinforced their intention to conclude the signing of the partnership agreement with Mercosur in January.
“We would like to convey our firm commitment to proceed with the signing of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and the Interim Trade Agreement at the beginning of January,” says the document signed by the presidents of the European Council, António Costa, and the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The EU regrets that the signing cannot be carried out during the summit taking place this Saturday, 20th, in Foz do Iguaçu. The reason for the postponement lies in the “finalization of internal procedures necessary within the Council to authorize the official act”, explains the letter. European leaders assured, however, that they are actively working to complete these steps without delay

Costa and von der Leyen also express gratitude for Lula’s leadership and personal commitment to the relationship between the two blocs. The agreements are described as the central foundation for strengthening political, economic and strategic ties between the regions.
