Israeli attack on school leaves at least five dead in Gaza City

Five Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on a school housing displaced people in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City, the head of Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Mohamed Abu Selmia, told Reuters on Friday (19).

The Palestinian civil emergency service said in a statement that most of the dead were children and added that several injured people had been transferred to hospitals for treatment. Palestinians held a funeral on Saturday (20) for the five people killed.

The civil emergency service said it was only able to recover after coordination between the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Israelis.

stated, in relation to the attack, that several individuals considered suspicious were identified in command structures outside the designated ceasefire line, and that its troops opened fire on them.

“The Israel Defense Forces are aware of the allegation of casualties in the area, and the details are being analyzed,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

The Palestinian group Hamas called the attack a “brutal crime” and yet another violation of the ceasefire agreement.

With these five deaths, deaths from Israeli fire have risen to 400 since the ceasefire began in October, according to the Ministry of Health.

Israel said three of its soldiers were killed by Palestinian militants in Gaza during the same period.
