Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), authorized this Friday (Dec 19, 2025) that the former president (PL), who is serving a sentence for an attempted coup d’état at the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasília, undergo surgery.
reported that Bolsonaro has a “bilateral inguinal hernia” requiring surgical repair “as soon as possible”. In his decision, Moraes determined that Bolsonaro’s defense must speak out within 24 hours about the “schedule and date intended for the elective surgery to be performed”. Leia a (PDF – 542 kB).
Moraes, however, denied the request for house arrest.
The PF document states that Bolsonaro suffers from a “persistent hiccup”, with discomfort in the abdominal region.
“In view of the above, this expert Medical Board concludes that the expert JAIR MESSIAS BOLSONARO has a bilateral inguinal hernia that requires elective surgical repair. Regarding the hiccups, the phrenic nerve block is technically pertinent”states the report.
For PF doctors, the surgical procedure is a viable alternative, given that the treatments that the former president has already undergone have not resolved the worsening of sleep and the limitations of the case. d states that the lack of more efficient treatment can increase the “risk of complications of hernia, due to increased intra-abdominal pressure”.
