The handicrafts of the Azores have once again been recognized at European level with the Geographical Indication certification. After Viola da Terra, last year, now it was the turn of the Registos do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres to receive the seal of quality and origin, in an act of appreciation for one of the most emblematic artisanal productions on the island of São Miguel.
These are handcrafted paintings that represent the faith and devotion of the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, to its patron saint. The Records of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres are true works of art that – in a single piece – combine conventual traditions with the creativity of those who produce them. Now, they have received the European Geographical Indication certificate, in recognition of one of the most emblematic artisanal productions in the Azores.
Manuela Linhares has been recording for 25 years. Crafts are just a hobby in the life of the teacher, who was one of the 10 artisans awarded this European certification.
“It’s an image that is adorned with noble fabrics…I think the idea is to always reproduce the colors of the scaffold, which are vibrant colors. Therefore, it is a moment of joy, of procession, of celebration”, he says.
Flowers are one of the centerpieces of the records. Each artisan has their own style and there are those who continue to opt for a more traditional touch. The certification european, ua way to ensure the quality and identity of this tradition, and reason to be proud for those contemplated.
The records are associated with the devotion to the Santo Cristo dos Milagres which, every year, attracts thousands of people to the island of São Miguel. The festivities generally take place in the month of May and have been, since the 17th century, the most important religious event in the region.
