New concerns of Seoul: Possible strengthening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea?

Representative of the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow recently he negotiated with Russian officials on North Korea’s nuclear program and other regional security issues. This was reported by diplomatic sources to the Jonhap agency on Sunday, TASR reports.

In the Russian capital, according to sources, the South Korean representative of the Department of Diplomacy, which deals with the North Korean nuclear issue, discussed with Oleg Burmistrov, the ambassador of Russian diplomacy for the North Korean nuclear issue, as well as with other officials.

The South Korean official apparently requested that Russia played a constructive role in securing peace on the Korean Peninsulawhile Seoul plans to resume dialogue with North Korea next year and at the same time efforts are being made to end the war in Ukraine.

Jonhap notes that given Russia’s close ties with North Korea, South Korea likely believes that Moscow can play a critical role in securing Pyongyang’s return to dialogue. According to the agency, South Korea could also use the meeting to expressing concern about military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which Seoul perceives as a possible security threat to the Korean Peninsula.
