Dialogue with North Korea

A South Korean official has apparently called for Russia to play a constructive role in securing peace on the Korean Peninsula, with Seoul planning to resume dialogue with North Korea next year and efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Jonhap notes that given Russia’s close ties with North Korea, South Korea likely believes that Moscow can play a critical role in securing Pyongyang’s return to dialogue. According to the agency, South Korea could also use the meeting to express concerns about military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which Seoul perceives as a possible security threat to the Korean Peninsula.

Russia’s influence on the peninsula

South Korea’s foreign ministry recently said it will closely monitor negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and seek a constructive role for Russia on issues related to the Korean Peninsula, while seeking to restore relations with Moscow. It also said it would continue diplomatic efforts to stop military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which it says violates UN Security Council resolutions.
