Chamber cancels Eduardo and Ramagem’s diplomatic passport – 12/22/2025 – Politics

On Friday (19) the diplomatic passports of (-SP) and (PL-RJ) were canceled, one day for both parliamentarians.

The documents of their wives and children were also annulled, according to information from the Chamber. Only parliamentarians with active mandates are entitled to diplomatic passports, which led to the House’s decision.

The (Supreme Federal Court) had already ordered Itamaraty to annul Eduardo’s diplomatic passport. Government members say, privately, that the court order was given confidentially in November.

The Chamber announced the cancellation of the documents in a letter sent by the second secretary, deputy Lula da Fonte (-PE). Now, Ramagem and Eduardo must return the documents to . The two impeached deputies are living in the United States and would have entered the country using diplomats, according to .

The cancellation of their passports does not immediately affect their stay in the USA, according to diplomatic sources from the American government. This right is granted, generally with a defined period, when a citizen of another country enters United States territory.

Ramagem arrived in November. Eduardo traveled to the country in March, but has already left for international trips and returned to American territory, most recently, also in November.

A canceled passport can make international travel unfeasible and create obstacles for returning to Brazil. The two, however, can request a return authorization at any Brazilian consular post in the USA, if they decide to return.

Eduardo had his mandate revoked due to excessive absences from the Chamber sessions last Thursday (18). In the American country, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was speaking out in favor of the president’s sanctions against Brazil, in an attempt to reverse his father’s arrest.

“The day after the revocation of my mandate came the news of the cancellation of my passport. Make no mistake, the intention has always been to block me abroad. Therefore, it is very likely that in fact [o ministro do STF Alexandre de] Moraes gave a secret order to prevent me from getting my ordinary passport”, Eduardo published on the social network X on Sunday afternoon (21), without providing evidence.

Alexandre Ramagem fled to the United States in September, during the trial of the coup plot in the STF, when he was sentenced to loss of office and 16 years and one month in prison for participating in the attempted coup d’état.

After his conviction, Ramagem lost his political rights for eight years. In Eduardo’s case, he will still have the right to compete in 2026.

On Friday (19), Ramagem published a message on social media criticizing the Chamber’s decision to revoke his mandate and stated that the attitude of the president of the House, the deputy (Republicanos-PB), was the result of “pure cowardice”.

“Cowardice is being aware of what is right and not doing it. You cannot have the courage to defend your own institution and Parliament’s mandates in accordance with the law,” said the former delegate in a video.

The panel that decided to revoke the mandates of Ramagem and Eduardo was made up of Motta and six other full members, in addition to four substitutes. Among the incumbents, in addition to the President of the Chamber, deputies Lula da Fonte (PP-PE), Delegate Katarina (PSD-SE) and Carlos Veras (PT-PE) signed in favor of the impeachment. Of the substitutes, Paulo Folletto (PSB-ES), Antonio Carlos Rodrigues (PL-SP) and Dr. Victor Linhalis (Podemos-ES) also endorsed the loss of mandate.

Deputies Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA), Sergio Souza (MDB-PR) and Altineu Côrtes (PL-RJ), as well as Paulo Alexandre Barbosa (PSDB-SP), who is a substitute, did not sign the letter.
