The most ecological Christmas gift is one that will not end up as waste and will be used for a long time. Greenpeace Slovakia spokeswoman Miroslava Ábelová stated this for TASR. Shared experiences can be an idea for a more ecological Christmas gift, so he recommends, for example, theater or cinema tickets, courses, concerts or trips.
“If you like to give material gifts, it’s nice to look in antique stores, various bazaars and the like, which today often offer almost or completely new books, toys or clothes.” noted Ábelová. In the case that some people do not like to buy in second-hand stores, they can think about supporting local brands and manufacturers, or buy a higher-quality item with a longer lifespan.
According to Ábelová, volunteering for various non-profit organizations can be a more valuable gift they help nature, seniors, homeless people or abandoned animals, or financial assistance that people can use to support these organizations on behalf of the recipient.
“If we want to wrap gifts in an ecological way, we can use recycled or recyclable paper, different cloth packaging, newspapers, maps, old calendars, reusable gift bags. Instead of classic adhesive tape, we can use paper tape,” the spokeswoman for Greenpeace zoomed in.
