The transfer to Australia of an Italian Championship match between Milan and Como, scheduled for the beginning of February, has been cancelled, the organizers announced this Monday (22), following criticism of the project.
“The project to organize the first match of a European championship outside the borders in Perth has been abandoned by mutual agreement”, announced in a joint statement the Lega Serie A, responsible for organizing the Italian, and the Western Australian authorities.
“Both parties made this decision due to uncontrollable financial risks, costly approval conditions and last-minute problems beyond their control,” they added, without indicating where the match will be played.
The game, scheduled for the 24th round, will not be held at San Siro, Milan’s stadium, which will be used at the beginning of February for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, between February 6th and 22nd.
“Despite meticulous and rigorous adherence to the complex authorization process, which lasted several months, it became impossible to stage the Milan-Como match in Perth on 8 February,” commented Enzio Simonelli, President of Lega Serie A.
In October, the Spanish LaLiga had already canceled a similar proposal to move a match between Villarreal and Barcelona to Miami.
