Luck after bad luck: 468 million euros from Spain's biggest lottery goes to city devastated by fires

After a year in which there was a “terrible cascade of emotions”, the town of La Bañeza has a real reason to celebrate

The town of La Bañeza, in Castile and Leon, was suddenly caught in one of the worst fires in the history of Spain. It still rained, but the water that fell from the sky came too late to help.

Months after the tragedy, a kind of divine compensation arrived just in time for Christmas.

The approximately 10 thousand inhabitants found themselves presented with hundreds of thousands of euros, after finding out that they were the winners of the lottery that drives almost all Spaniards crazy.

We are talking about El Gordo, of course, which arrived to alleviate the anguish of a town where three people died and where the fire destroyed around 55 thousand hectares, leaving close to eight thousand people without a home.

The mayor of La Bañeza admitted that this news produced a “cascade of emotions after a terrible year”.

“Winning the lottery, in addition to being a cause for joy and excitement, was something that fell from the heavens to a place that needs it so much”, said Javier Carrera, quoted by .

All this with the victory of several tenths, numbers that cost 20 euros and pay 400 thousand euros each. Now, 117 series were released in La Bañeza alone, which resulted in a prize of 468 million euros for the inhabitants of the harassed town.

It was decided that each of the 198 series this year would be worth four million euros. Multiply that by 117 and we have that astronomical amount.

In total, this year’s El Gordo was worth 2.77 billion euros, shared by thousands of people from all over the country and beyond.
