President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva intends to make the veto of the bill to measure the sentences of those convicted in the coup plot a political act to mark the two years since January 8th. Lula’s plans were revealed by the government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA). The president is planning an event to commemorate the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, in 2023, with government ministers and presidents of the Chamber, Senate and Federal Supreme Court.
— On January 8th, President Lula will do an act so that we don’t let go of the memory of that sad day when they went against democracy. And I don’t know what day he will sign the veto, but he will sign the veto from now on — said the senator in an interview with Rádio Metrópole, in Bahia.
Lula has already stated that he will veto the text that reduces the sentences of those convicted of the coup plot and would even benefit former president Jair Bolsonaro. The president also warned ministers to be in on January 8th.

At a breakfast with journalists last Thursday, the president defended punishment for those involved in the coup plot and said that it is necessary to wait for the criminal action to end. The dosimetry bill was approved in the Chamber and the Senate and has now gone to Lula for sanction or veto. Lula has 15 days to submit his decision, starting this Monday.
— People who committed crimes against Brazilian democracy will have to pay for the acts committed against the country. (…) With all the respect I have for the National Congress, when it reaches my desk, I will veto it. This is no secret to anyone. We have not yet reached the end of the process (of the coup plot), we need to know who the financiers are — said Lula last Thursday.
At the last ministerial meeting of 2025, Lula asked ministers to be in Brasília on January 8 to participate in the event:
—Each minister here has to know that on January 8th we will have the symbolic act against January 8th here in Brasília. Therefore, ministers who want to take a vacation, take a vacation, but be here on the 8th. Because there is no point in the president calling and the ministers not coming – said Lula – They want January 8th to fall into oblivion, and we want society to never forget that one day this country had someone who didn’t know how to lose the election and decided in the most idiotic way to continue governing this country.
