Russia admits that attack may have been carried out by Ukrainian intelligence services. It wouldn’t be (by far) the first time.
A Russian general died this Monday following the explosion of a device placed under the car he was preparing to conduct in southern Moscow, the country’s main criminal investigation agency said.
The lieutenant general Fanil Sarvarovhead of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, died shortly after from injuries, said Svetlana Petrenko, official spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee.
Petrenko added that authorities are following “several lines of investigation into the attack”, admitting that the crime could have been carried out “by the Ukrainian information services”.
Previously, several media outlets reported that a car had exploded in a parking lot on Yaseneva Street, in Moscow, on Monday morning, with the driver inside.
Kiev has not commented on the attack that took place today, but the Ukrainian security service claimed responsibility for one against a high-ranking Russian soldier in December 2024.
The lieutenant general Igor Kirillovhead of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical protection forces of the Armed Forces, was then killed by a bomb placed on a motorbike parked in front of the building where he lived. Detained for the attack, the Uzbekistani confirmed that he was “recruited by the Ukrainian special services”, who, in addition, promised him a change of residence “to one of the European countries”.

In April this year, another high-ranking Russian general attended the arrival of US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow. Video surveillance footage showed a car exploding when Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik approached him in a suburb of the capital.
