The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), stated this Monday (22) that the delay in the delivery of the new section of Rodoanel Norte was due to Operation Lava Jato and the corruption of previous governments.
“A big problem arose on this work, the problem of corruption, a wound that plagues Brazil. We face here and we saw here the Operation Lava Jato of those governments that have become accustomed to living in corruption”, said Tarcísio. “And that’s why this work was stopped because of Lava Jato, because of corruption.”
In a speech in the municipality of Arujá, Metropolitan Region of the State, the head of the São Paulo Executive also criticized the “promises” made by previous administrations. However, he did not provide further details about the relationship between the delay in the works and the corruption mentioned.

The resumption of the project took place in 2023, after the auction that granted the highway to the company Via Appia. Under the contract, the concessionaire will be responsible for managing the Rodoanel Norte for 31 years and will invest R$2 billion to complete the works. The state government will contribute another R$1.4 billion, resulting in a total investment of R$3.4 billion in the project.
It is expected that the second section should be delivered in the second half of 2026. According to the governor, this Monday’s inauguration was carried out six months ahead of schedule.
With 24 kilometers, the new section will be opened to traffic on Tuesday, 23rd. It goes from km 129 to km 153, and will connect the Fernão Dias and Presidente Dutra highways, with connection to the Eastern section of the Rodoanel itself, at the height of the Ayrton Senna Highway.
Also attending the event were vice-governor Felício Ramuth (PSD); the president of the Legislative Assembly, André do Prado (PL); and the mayor of the city of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB). The president of the National Development Bank (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante, was present and was booed by Tarcísio’s audience when he defended the achievements of the Lula (PT) government.
