What kind of weather can we expect for Christmas and New Year?

Will it be white for Christmas this year or will we have a muddy topping again? We have an up-to-date forecast and an overview of what kind of weather awaits us until the New Year.

In the snow or as always?

Maybe you also watch the thermometer with hope every year and hope that this year it will finally work out and Christmas will be snowed. Unfortunately, the statistics are inexorable, because in our latitudes, a white Christmas in the lowlands is rather a rarity. The chance is usually only around 20%.

The phenomenon that meteorologists and our ancestors call it is to blame christmas topping. It is an almost iron regularity with which warm oceanic air from the southwest arrives in Central Europe around December 24th. He will reliably dispose of even the nicest item that was created during Advent and turn it into unpopular mud or slush.

Are we entitled to a white Christmas? Dagmar Honsová, of course, does not claim that it will snow, but points out that, according to the statistics, we can at least hope.

What is it like on Christmas Day this year?

If you are going to the tree this year, prepare umbrellas rather than sleds, even though the situation will be quite tense according to experts. According to the current models, it will start coming to the Czech Republic from the northeast around Christmas Day tide cooler air. What does this mean for our specific plans?

In the lowlands: Expect cloudy skies and temperatures between 1°C to 5°C. Rain or unpleasant drizzle may appear in places, but by the evening it may turn into mixed precipitation from the north.

In the mountains and in the middle locations: Here the view is more cheerful, because it should snow from a height of about 600 meters above sea level. Inhabitants of mountainous areas will probably get the real winter scenery.

The whole republic: The Czech Republic will be divided on this day, while it will be dry and muddy in the south of Moravia, the northern parts of the country will feel the cooling much earlier.

Holidays and outlook for the New Year

The forecast for the days after Christmas Eve suggests that winter will make a stronger statement. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute and models such as Aladin or ECMWF, we are in for a rather frosty and drier week.

Period Expected weather Temperatures (day/night)
December 25 and 26 Cloudy and snow showers even at lower altitudes. -1 °C to +3 °C / to -6 °C
Mid-holidays Partial clearing and so-called bare frosts without heavy precipitation -2 °C to +2 °C / to -9 °C
New Year’s Eve and New Year Increasing clouds and a chance of rain and snow from the west. 0 °C to +4 °C / around -2 °C

So it looks like the end of the year will be marked by frosty air. Even though there will be relatively little precipitation and it doesn’t look like much of a snowstorm in the lowlands, sub-zero temperatures will force us to heat up properly and put on warm layers. It could get slightly warmer on New Year’s Eve, which often brings with it . So tread carefully during New Year’s walks.

And don’t forget the old gardening wisdom that says that if it is on Christmas Eve, the night will be clear, the harvest will be fat. Even if the landscape is not covered with snow, a clear sky foretells a successful next season in our flower beds.
