The defense of the former president (PL) asked the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) for authorization for him to be hospitalized on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and undergo surgery on Christmas Day (25th).
The minister authorized the surgery to be carried out in a decision this Friday (20). At the time, he requested that the schedule be informed, as well as the expected date for the procedure to be carried out.
Also this Friday, the court confirmed that the former president needs to undergo elective surgery and another procedure as soon as possible. The report was sent after the minister’s determination.
In the same decision, the minister rejected the request for house arrest that the defense had been requesting since before the case became final and the sentence began.
Bolsonaro has been detained at the PF regional superintendency in Brasília since November 22nd.
According to Moraes, the former president is “in custody in a location absolutely close to the private hospital where he provides emergency health care” and the address would even be closer than his home. Thus, imprisonment in the PF would not harm Bolsonaro in case of need for emergency displacement.
According to the report, in relation to the hernia, the case is an elective repair, that is, a scheduled surgical procedure, which is not urgent or emergency. The analysis was carried out by four experts from the National Institute of Criminalistics last Wednesday (17).
Hiccups require faster intervention, both because previous treatments have not been effective and because the condition can worsen other conditions.
Bolsonaro’s defense asked on two occasions for urgent authorization for the former president to undergo surgery. The first petition was presented on December 9th and the last one on Monday (15th).
According to lawyers, he needs a surgical procedure to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, in addition to additional interventions.
Inguinal hernia is a condition in which tissue in the abdomen swells and causes a bulge to appear in the groin area.
Moraes determined that the examination carried out last Sunday (14) and the reports attached to the case files were sent for analysis by medical experts last Wednesday (17) at the National Institute of Criminalistics.
To experts, Bolsonaro reported that the hiccups started in September 2018 after the first abdominal surgery. After that, he underwent another seven surgeries and the condition returned each post-operative period and lasted around 30 days. After the last procedure, however, the hiccups didn’t stop.
