President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) stated this Tuesday (23) that he responded to a request from the senator (PSD-MA) and that, if it were up to him, “possibly” the initiative would not come to fruition.
Lula said, during a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto to sign the decree, that he spoke in his office with Eliziane about the measure and that he later discussed the issue with the Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes.
“This wouldn’t have been done if you [Eliziane Gama] hadn’t shown up in my office with that complaining girl face. This is often how things happen in the country. Sometimes a conversation with a person gives rise to a law,” said Lula.
“If it were up to me, this decree probably wouldn’t come out. If there wasn’t someone who said: ‘President, if you’re lame here, let’s make the decree’. I’ve already done so much, why couldn’t I do this? Because someone was missing. With so many friends I have who are evangelicals, someone would remember. It was a day when you [Eliziane Gama] remembered. You had come into my room other times and hadn’t remembered. But there was a day when you came with the mission to remember and you remembered”, he added.
The recognition of gospel culture as a national manifestation was anticipated by Lula last week during a ministerial meeting held on Wednesday (17).
The PT member is trying to get closer to the electorate in 2026, which in recent years was mostly closer to the former president (PL).
The draft of the decree, which Sheet had access, recognizes gospel as a manifestation of national culture, encompassing music, theater and religious literature. The measure also establishes guidelines for the appreciation, promotion and protection of gospel culture in the country.
In a speech this Tuesday, Lula stated that the initiative seeks to “do justice to the evangelical people and gospel music” and “represents another important step of welcome and respect” for the group in Brazil.
