Former president, who is serving a 27-year sentence, will undergo inguinal hernia repair on December 24th and 25th; decision imposes Federal Police escort and prohibits use of cell phones and computers in the room

Moraes authorizes Bolsonaro’s surgery at Christmas

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (), authorized this Tuesday (23) the transfer of the former president to the DF Star Hospital, in , to carry out elective surgery. The procedure is scheduled for December 25th, the Christmas holiday, with hospitalization scheduled for this Wednesday (24th).

The decision takes place within the scope of Criminal Execution No. 169. Bolsonaro is serving a sentence of 27 years and 3 months in prison in an initial closed regime. The former president’s defense requested medical intervention after he presented new health complications in early December.

Medical evaluation

The authorization was based on an expert report from the (PF), carried out on December 17, which confirmed the need for the procedure. Report No. 2924/2025 indicated that the custodian has a “bilateral inguinal hernia that requires elective surgical repair”. The Attorney General’s Office () was in favor of the request.

Strict security scheme

Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ order establishes strict security protocols for Bolsonaro’s stay at the private hospital:

– Discreet transport: Travel must be carried out by the Federal Police in a discreet manner, with boarding and disembarking in the hospital garages;

– 24-hour surveillance: There will be teams on standby and the presence of at least two federal police officers at the hospital room door 24/7;

– Communication blocked: It is expressly prohibited for computers, cell phones or any electronic devices to enter the room, except for necessary medical equipment;

The decision authorizes the stay of the former president’s wife, as a companion during the entire period of hospitalization. Any other visits may only occur with prior judicial authorization.

The Federal Police must coordinate the details of the hospitalization directly with the director of the DF Star Hospital, Dr. Allison Bruno Barcelos Borges.
