Fermented classic, symbol of the end of year festivities, has gained countless versions,

With the arrival of Christmas, panettone and chocotones once again occupy a prominent position on Brazilian shelves and tables. The fermented classic, symbol of the end of year festivities, has gained countless versions, fillings and proposals, but among so many options, the question arises: which is the healthiest choice?

According to nutritionist Ana Luisa Vilela, both are cakes made from flour, sugar, eggs and butter or margarine, meaning you need to measure your consumption. The main difference is in the filling or topping: traditional panettone comes with candied fruits, while chocotone has chocolate drops and the danger is also in the more enhanced versions, with extra fillings and lots of sugar.” She reinforces that, more important than choosing between panettone and chocotone, is observing the label. “It’s obvious that as a doctor I will recommend that consumers prefer versions with a lower sugar content, and you should keep an eye on the type of fat used in addition to additives. Oh, also remembering that we should avoid saturated or hydrogenated fats”, he explains.

Ana remembers that, in general, traditional panettone tends to be lower in calories. “Traditional panettone tends to have fewer calories (around 350 per 100 g), mainly because chocolate increases the energy content of chocotone (which has around 400 calories per 100 g), this being the traditional cake without extra topping or add-ons”, he points out. According to the expert, those who want to maintain balance should look for light, diet, whole-grain versions or those with a higher fiber content, in addition to prioritizing shorter ingredient lists and fewer additives.

Following the idea that it is possible to celebrate the date with caution, we have selected special options of sweets that are popular both as a dessert and as gifts among friends and family.
