Russia again attacked Ukraine’s energy sector this Tuesday (23), causing emergency power cuts in several regions, including the capital Kiev and its surroundings, the country’s Ministry of Energy reported.
“Air defense forces are working to eliminate the threat in the sky over the capital,” Kiev’s military administration said on Telegram, urging residents to remain in shelters until the situation is under control.
Authorities did not immediately report casualties or damage. The full scale of the offensive has not yet been determined.
The attack comes shortly after the end of a round of peace talks mediated by the United States in Miami.
Weekend negotiations brought together American officials with Ukrainian and European delegations, as well as separate contacts with Russian representatives, while Washington assessed whether there was room for an agreement that would end the Russia war already Ukraine.
The attacks are part of a broad offensive by the Kremlin into Ukraine, which is experiencing a harsh winter.
In early December, Russian drones and missiles targeted the eastern European country’s infrastructure, leaving more than a million homes without power.
The offensives also injured several civilians and left many areas without water supplies, according to regional authorities.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko highlighted that the attacks dealt “painful blows to Ukraine’s energy sector”.
