"State of heightened alert": Poland mobilizes fighter jets after Russia attacks western Ukraine with 600 drones

Russian attack comes two days after US-led peace talks in Miami

Tension rose again in eastern Europe this Tuesday morning, after Poland mobilized fighter jets following Russian air strikes aimed at western Ukraine, near the Polish border. The Polish armed forces confirmed the activation of military resources, stressing that it was a preventive response given the proximity of bombings.

“Fighters have been mobilized and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been placed on high alert”, announced the operational command of the Polish armed forces on the social network

According to Reuters, the Russian attacks had a direct impact on the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of Tuesday. Kiev was hit, prompting authorities to enact “emergency power cuts” just two days after US-led peace talks held in Miami.

According to the Ukrainian air force, air raid warnings sounded across almost the entire territory of Ukraine. In Kiev, debris fell near a residential building. The National Police of Ukraine revealed that four people were injured, including a 16-year-old girl, after a “hostile drone” hit a five-story building in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

Russia used 600 drones in the attack

The scale of the offensive Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, confirmed that Russia launched more than 600 drones and dozens of missiles during night attacks, with the energy sector as the main target. In a message published on Telegram, he indicated that energy infrastructures located in the west of the country were those that suffered the greatest damage.

“This was a deliberate and cynical attack by Russia on Christmas Eve. While people were preparing for the holidays, the enemy was trying to leave Ukrainian families without electricity, heat and a sense of security,” said the leader of the Ukrainian government, adding that “due to the damage caused by the enemy throughout the country, emergency power cut times were introduced.”
