Ukraine reports casualties and blackouts after large-scale Russian attacks

The massive Russian attack on Ukraine hit energy infrastructure and ports. Poland deployed fighters to protect the airspace.

On Tuesday, Russia launched another large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine. According to local authorities, at least three people were killed and several places were left without electricity. The interventions came at a time when temperatures in most areas are dropping to freezing point, TASR informs, according to a report by the AFP agency.

Neighboring Poland deployed fighter jets to protect its airspace during the Russian attacks, the Polish military said on the X social network.

Energy infrastructure damaged

Ukraine’s state energy company Ukrenerho announced that the massive attack caused fires in several parts of the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi added that Russia used more than 600 drones and 30 missiles during the strike. One person lost his life in the western Khmelnytsky region, another in the capital city of Kyiv. The third victim was later confirmed in the Zhytomyr region, where a four-year-old girl lost her life as a result of her injuries. At the same time, local authorities reported on several injured people in different parts of the country.

In recent days, Moscow has also intensified its attacks on the port city of Odessa. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia is trying to completely cripple the country’s maritime logistics. The latest strikes in Odessa caused fires, but emergency services reported no injuries.

Maritime logistics at risk

Russian airstrikes in the southern regions of Ukraine have recently been escalating. Bridges and ports are the targets, while the attacks cut off electricity and heat supplies for thousands of residents.

The latest wave of attacks followed weekend talks in Miami, where the United States held separate talks with Russian and Ukrainian delegations in an effort to end the war.

Potential progress in negotiations

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Monday that Moscow and Washington were making “slow progress” in talks on a possible end to the conflict. Discussions are ongoing with US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff described the negotiations with both parties as “constructive”, but a fundamental breakthrough has apparently not yet occurred.
