There was Gerhard, for example. The Lower Austrian worked in the icy cold for 20 years. He had received goods and sorted them in the freezer of a food wholesaler. At minus 21 degrees, five hours a day. When he had enough of the cold and wanted another job, his employer couldn’t offer him anything new – they parted ways amicably. At least that’s what Gerhard told us later. He then looked for work for four years. He sent hundreds of applications every year, all in vain. He was over 50, not a skilled worker, but significantly more expensive compared to his younger colleagues.
