German giant buys 50% of new port in Espírito Santo

SÃO PAULO, ‍Dec 23 (Reuters) – Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), a ‌wholly owned subsidiary of the German ‍maritime and container transport company Hapag-Lloyd, has signed an agreement to acquire ‌50% of the shares in Imetame Logística Porto (ILP), a joint venture focused on container terminal operations in a new port in Espírito Santo, ‌the company said on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, HGT and Grupo Imetame will develop and operate the new terminal located in Aracruz. Among the sectors that are keeping an eye on the new port is coffee — Espírito Santo is the largest producer of canephora beans in Brazil.

The unit is expected to begin operations by mid-2028, with a projected annual capacity of around 1.2 million TEUs and 750 meters of quay.

“Latin America is a strategic market for Hanseatic Global Terminals and Hapag-Lloyd,” said Dheeraj Bhatia, CEO of HGT, in a statement.

With a planned depth of 17 meters, the terminal will be able to receive large ships.

The values ​​of the transaction between HGT ‌and Grupo Imetame were not disclosed.

The closing of the transaction depends on the approval of competent antitrust authorities and regulators, in addition to other usual conditions for this type of transaction.
