Michelle, without electronics and 24-hour surveillance: what will Bolsonaro’s hospitalization be like in DF

The hospitalization of former president Jair Bolsonaro, authorized by the Federal Supreme Court, will be marked by a reinforced security scheme, access restrictions and direct control by the Federal Police (PF) from the moment he leaves prison until he is discharged from hospital. Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decision details what each stage of Bolsonaro’s visit to the DF Star hospital, in Brasília, will be like, where he will undergo tests and surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia.

Bolsonaro will be taken to the hospital this Wednesday morning. Travel must occur discreetly, with disembarkation directly through the unit’s garages, without any public exposure. The entire route will be under the responsibility of the Federal Police, who will also oversee security during hospitalization.

The court order determines uninterrupted surveillance. At least two federal police officers must remain permanently positioned at the door of the hospital room, with supervision 24 hours a day. Furthermore, the PF will maintain teams on standby inside and outside the hospital, with autonomy to reinforce personnel whenever it deems necessary.

Access to the room will be strictly controlled. Moraes banned the entry of cell phones, computers or any other electronic device, with the exception only of medical equipment essential for treatment. Monitoring compliance with the rule will be the exclusive responsibility of the Federal Police, which will operate within the hospital unit throughout the period of hospitalization.

On a personal level, the decision authorizes the presence of former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro as a companion during the entire hospitalization, respecting hospital rules. Any other visits — including from close family members — will depend on specific judicial authorization, which in practice restricts the former president’s circle of contact while he is hospitalized.

The defense had requested the recurring entry of two of his sons, Flávio and Carlos Bolsonaro, which was denied by Moraes.

From a medical point of view, this Wednesday will be dedicated to clinical, laboratory and imaging exams, in addition to pre-operative preparation. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning, Christmas Day, with an estimated duration of between three and four hours, according to surgeon Cláudio Birolini. The medical team committed to publishing daily bulletins with updates on procedures and clinical developments.

In addition to correcting the bilateral inguinal hernia, doctors are evaluating performing an anesthetic block of the phrenic nerve, a procedure that could help control the persistent hiccups reported by Bolsonaro in recent months. The timing of this intervention will still be defined, depending on clinical assessment after the main surgery.

In the decision, Moraes stressed that the authorization for hospitalization does not change the fulfillment of the sentence of 27 years and three months in prison imposed on the former president for an attempted coup d’état. The minister highlighted that Bolsonaro maintains “full health treatment conditions” even in custody and that the chosen hospital is located close to the Federal Police Superintendence, which, according to him, preserves security and the execution of the sentence.

The medical team’s expectation is that Bolsonaro will remain hospitalized between five and seven days after surgery, a period necessary for pain control, physiotherapy, prevention of thrombotic events and post-operative monitoring. Discharge will depend on clinical evolution.
