Motta’s father posts photo with Lula and seeks support in the election – 12/23/2025 – Brasília Hoje

Father of the president of , (-PB), the mayor of Patos (PB), Nabor Wanderley (Republicans), posted a photo on social media with the president (PT) this Tuesday (23) along with the “plate” with which he owes Federal in 2026.

PT members are betting on the electoral situation to realign Motta to the government, as his father must need Lula’s support in the election. , their alliance with Paraíba was at risk after disagreements in the conduct of the votes, which could also have an impact on national politics.

The photo of Lula with Nabor Wanderley, the governor of Paraíba, João Azevedo (PSB), and vice-governor Lucas Ribeiro (PP) was taken at the inauguration of the new Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Feliciano, son of federal deputy Damião Feliciano (União Brasil-PB), an ally of Motta.

Two politicians who participated in the event, however, deny that the photo represented a promise of electoral support, and point out that the portrait was registered on the social networks of the three Paraíba politicians, but was not replicated by Lula.

The election in Paraíba represents an impasse for the president, with his base divided into two platforms. Vice-governor Lucas Ribeiro is expected to take over the government in April, with Azevedo resigning to contest the election for , and will run for re-election. Nabor will be the other candidate on the Senate ticket – in 2026, there are two senatorial seats up for grabs.

The mayor of João Pessoa, Cícero Lucena (MDB), will resign in April to also run for government, and wants to count on Lula’s support. The PT member would have promised support to senator Veneziano do Rêgo (MDB), who is a candidate for re-election. He is the brother of the president of the TCU (Federal Audit Court), Vital do Rêgo.

State politicians claim that the PT is at the base of João Azevedo, with positions in the state government, and that the natural thing would be to repeat the alliance in 2026 and also support Motta’s father. His disagreements with the Lula government, however, made this alliance more distant.

The President of the Chamber on several occasions in the second half of the year: in the overthrow of the MP (Provisional Measure) to increase taxes, in the choice of deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP-SP) as rapporteur of the Anti-Faction bill and in demanding support from PT members for the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) of Blindagem – a topic that was against the Chamber.

Furthermore, he diverged from Palácio do Planalto and the left when guiding the vote on the bill that reduces sentences for former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and in the attempt to impeach deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ), who ended up suspended from office for six months.

Motta arrived at what was expected, such as the sanctioning of the Income Tax exemption for those earning up to R$5,000, but he came closer to Lula again in the final stretch of the year, with the appointment of Gustavo to the Ministry of Tourism and the approval of a bill to cut tax subsidies and increase taxes on bets and fintechs.
