SP should increase biomethane production by 50% in 2026 – 12/24/2025 – Panel

The state of São Paulo expects to increase by 50%, with the entry into operation of seven units.

Currently, there are eight authorized plants, responsible for a production of around 500 thousand m³/day. With the new units, which are in the authorization phase with federal agencies, 257 thousand m³/day will be added to the installed capacity.

The growth potential in the coming years is much greater, reaching 6.4 million m³/day at its peak.
Biomethane is a gaseous biofuel obtained from the processing of biogas and has a strategic role in the energy transition. In some cities, gas use is more advanced.

In 2025, Presidente Prudente became the first in the country to be fully supplied with biomethane. Another highlight is Paulínia, which houses the largest production plant in Brazil. On site, waste from 35 municipalities in the Campinas region is transformed into energy.

The Integra Residues program, which promotes the regionalization of solid waste disposal to expand energy use and the generation of new products, currently has the participation of 344 municipalities.

According to a study carried out by Copersucar and released in October this year, São Paulo currently accounts for 40% of the country’s installed biomethane production capacity and 31% of the expansion projects in progress.

Biomethane is used as an input in the production of fertilizers, a source of energy in industrial processes and fuel for cargo and passenger transport fleets.

“São Paulo has the vocation to produce and promote biomethane, a strategic energy source essential for the energy transition. The State brings together a strong economy, robust infrastructure, qualified labor, proximity to consumer markets and the supply of accessible, safe and clean energy. This set of factors increases the competitiveness of the industry, promotes sustainability and attracts investments for the manufacture of sustainable products, with environmental and social gains”, says Natália Resende, Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of São Paulo.
