The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, says goodbye on March 9, 2026.
Marcelo will “throw the microphone” on March 9th. All eyes on the next head of state: what will he do in relation to the labor package and the nationality law?
The end is near. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has already started saying goodbye and even saying what he will do when he leaves the Presidency of the Republic, at the end of his second term, which will be on March 9, 2026.
Marcelo will leave to the next President of the Republic several politically sensitive dossiers that could mark the beginning of a new Presidency (for better or for worse).
Starting with two highly controversial “bombs”: the review and the reformulation of the .
which has entered the public debate and even presidential debates, faces transversal resistance. Candidates on the left and André Ventura demonstrated against the changes proposed by the Government. Marcelo called for dialogue, but the final political decision will be up to his successor, after the text passes through Parliament, where it can be changed or even rejected.
The nationality law also remains open. After the Constitutional Court had sinker the previous version, the President vetoed the diploma and sent it back to the Assembly. The new proposal is under public consultation until the end of the month and, with plenary sessions suspended between January 12th and 16th, the final deliberation should now take place under the watchful eye of the President-elect.
And there is also the effective application of the euthanasia law. Although approved after a presidential veto, it remains unregulated. If the impasse persists, the new head of state will be able to follow two paths: put pressure on the Government or choose not to intervene, leaving the law unenforced.
