Two policemen were killed in an overnight explosion in Moscow while trying to stop a suspect, Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement on Wednesday. “An explosive device was activated” when officers approached the suspect near their police vehicle, the Serious Crimes Investigation Committee said in a statement.

Forensic analysis of the explosion site

An earlier statement on Telegram said investigators were inspecting the crime scene and doing forensic analysis, including “medical and explosive tests.”

According to footage broadcast by Russian television, the police cordoned off the area around the explosion site. According to witnesses, the explosion occurred on Wednesday around 1:30 a.m. local time (Tuesday 11:30 p.m. CET).

Accusations against Kyiv

Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died near the site of the explosion on Monday when an improvised explosive device exploded under his parked car shortly after starting it. Sarvarov was the head of the training department of the Russian General Staff.

After the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv is accused of several attacks against Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures in the Russian interior and in the occupied territories. Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks, but has not yet commented on Monday’s.
