The United States Supreme Court imposed a setback on the US president’s migration offensive, this Tuesday (23) by blocking the sending of National Guard troops ordered by him to Chicago. The Republican claims that the measure is necessary to combat crime and protect immigration agents and their facilities in the country’s third largest city.

The governor of Illinois and the mayor of Chicago, both Democrats, firmly opposed the deployment of troops.

The Republican sent National Guard troops to three other cities governed by Democrats this year: Los Angeles, Washington and Memphis.

The attempts in Portland and Chicago were stopped by the courts. After two lower courts ruled against sending troops to Chicago, the Trump administration filed an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court.

In the petition filed with the Court, Attorney General John Sauer stated that federal agents in Chicago are “required to operate under the constant threat of violence from protesters.” He further said that blocking the shipment “unduly interferes with the president’s authority and unnecessarily puts federal personnel and property at risk.”

The Supreme Court, controlled by conservatives with six of the nine justices, rejected the appeal, something quite unusual since Trump’s return to the White House in January. Conservative justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch ruled against the measure.

About 300 members of the National Guard remain in the Chicago region, but do not participate in operations.
