Venezuela’s ambassador to the UN (United Nations), Samuel Moncada, accused the of subjecting Caracas to the “biggest extortion” in its history. “We are facing a power that acts outside international law, demanding that we Venezuelans abandon our country and hand it over,” said Moncada.
Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia and Chinese ambassador Sun Lei criticized US military and economic pressure on Venezuela. The representatives called the North American actions “cowboy behavior” and spoke of “intimidation”.
The United States has maintained a war fleet in the Caribbean since August. The country recently announced a naval blockade to prevent the export of Venezuelan oil. In response, the American ambassador, said that “the United States will do everything in its power to protect [seu] hemisphere, [suas] borders and the American people.” He reiterated Trump’s accusations that “Maduro is a fugitive wanted by American authorities and the head of a foreign terrorist organization “.
Experts point out that this cartel would function more like a permissive corruption network with illicit activities, than a drug trafficking organization itself.
Recently, the White House increased the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to US$50 million (approximately R$278 million).
