Chamber prohibits convicts from profiting from criminal works – 12/25/2025 – Panel

On the 17th, the (Constitution and Justice Commission) approved a project that includes in the Copyright Law the prohibition of convicts receiving amounts resulting from intellectual work related to the crime committed.

As it was final in nature, the project is now subject to deliberation by the Senate.

The original text, authored by the first vice-president of the Chamber, Altineu Côrtes (PL-RJ), placed the ban in the Penal Code. The rapporteur at the CCJ, deputy (PL-DF), changed this point and included the prohibition in the Copyright Law.

The proposal also provides that, if the convicted person receives any amount, heirs or the victim may, in a civil proceeding, request from him or the person responsible for the payment corresponding to moral damages, regardless of any compensation already made for the losses resulting from the criminal offense.

“This bill will bring a little justice to those who suffer as victims of crimes and still watch criminals get rich with their evil”, says Bia Kicis. “Cases like , and show how the notoriety of murders ends up becoming a business, and it is exactly this distortion that the law cuts, preserving public morality and ensuring that any value linked to works like this can be directed to the victims.”
