Daesh leader detained in Damascus: "We send a clear message"

An operation by the Syrian authorities in conjunction with the International Coalition resulted in the arrest of Taha al Zubi, after “meticulous surveillance” and “intense intelligence monitoring”.

Syrian authorities announced this Wednesday the arrest of Taha al Zubi, leader of Daesh in Damascus province, in an operation carried out in conjunction with the International Coalition.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of the leader of the terrorist organization in Damascus, Taha al Zubi, nicknamed ‘Abu Omar Tabia’, and several of his collaborators. An explosive belt and a military weapon were seized”, confirmed the head of the Internal Security Forces in the aforementioned Syrian region, Ahmed al Dalati, in statements to the state news agency SANA.

Al Zubi’s capture took place in the town of Muadamiyat, as part of a “precise security operation, directed against a hideout of the terrorist organization” and “after a meticulous surveillance and intense intelligence monitoring“, said the Syrian general.

According to Dalati, the detention represents “a hard blow” for the terrorist group and “confirms the high level of preparation” of the Syrian security forces to face “any threat to the security of the province [de Damasco] and its surroundings.”

“We send a clear message to anyone who dares to participate in terrorist activities or offer support to Daesh: justice will reach them wherever they are and they will not find refuge in our land. Syria’s security is a red line and we will continue to strike with an iron fist until the complete eradication of the remnants of terrorism and its hideouts,” he said.

At least five people died in bombings launched last Friday by the US-led coalition on targets allegedly belonging to Daesh in Deir Ezzor, in eastern Syria.

These attacks were carried out on retaliation for the deaths of three Americans – two soldiers and a civilian – in an action by an alleged member of the terrorist organization in Palmira, on December 13th.
