Greece’s coast guard searched for a missing child off the coast of Farmakonisi island on Thursday after 52 migrants were rescued in the Aegean Sea in two separate incidents in the area. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

Details about the nationality of the migrants are not known

The coast guard found 13 migrants who arrived on the small, uninhabited island, but one boy from the group was reported missing, the ANA news agency said.

Another 39 migrants were discovered on an inflatable vessel off the coast of the southern Greek island of Crete. Details of the migrants’ nationalities were not immediately released.

Two vessels of the Greek coast guard and one helicopter of the local air force took part in the operation off the coast of the island of Farmakonisi. The island is located opposite the Turkish coast, writes AFP, which reminds that many migrants from Turkey and Libya are trying to get to the Greek islands, for which they are the gateway to the European Union. Earlier this month, 17 people were found dead in a vessel drifting off the coast of Crete. Another 15 people are reported as missing. The ship sailed from the Libyan port of Tobruk and most of the victims came from Sudan or Egypt.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said more than 16,770 EU asylum seekers have arrived in Crete since the start of the year – more than any other Aegean island.
