The artist Toy revealed two years ago a tradition associated with Christmas that continues to arouse curiosity. Despite having stopped smoking as a teenager, aged 13, the singer explained that he maintains a very specific family ritual, restricted to this time of year, involving the occasional consumption of cannabis, a practice that he describes as exceptional and not continued for the rest of the year.
According to VIP magazine, the revelation was made on TVI’s Conta-me program, where the singer described childhood episodes that he now recognizes as excessive. Toy said that he started smoking at the age of nine and explained that his contact with alcohol happened even earlier, stating: “I wanted to be a man. My first binge was when I was six.”
According to the same source, one of these episodes ended up having serious consequences when, at the age of 12, he mixed alcoholic drinks and lost consciousness at home. Toy recalled that moment saying that “the next thing I knew I was on the couch foaming at the mouth” and that he had to be taken to the hospital to have his stomach washed.
Quitting tobacco at age 13
The publication writes that he gave up smoking at the age of 13, after his father discovered that he smoked. This moment marked a clear break with regular consumption, at an early stage in life, before prolonged dependence took hold.
Toy explained that his father’s reaction was decisive and summarized the message received in a direct sentence: “Everything that is vice is bad”. The singer stated that this warning began to guide his way of approaching any type of consumption.
A ritual reserved for Christmas Eve
The artist clarified that there is a family tradition that is repeated only at Christmas, involving the consumption of cannabis in a social context. The singer stressed that this is a specific practice and stated: “The truth is that cannabis is medicinal”.
She says that Toy explained the context behind this habit, adding: “Smoking weed once a year or two? A cigar? It’s something we do as a family because we’re all there together, we’re well and happy.” The singer rejected the idea of dependence, defending strictly limited consumption.
What is smoking and how dependence develops
According to the SNS 24 website, smoking is defined as an addiction caused by nicotine, a psychoactive substance present in tobacco leaves, which acts quickly in the brain and alters reward mechanisms, which can lead to a compulsive need to consume.
According to the same source, tobacco is the biggest preventable health risk and the main cause of premature death in the European Union. In Portugal, it is estimated that tobacco consumption has contributed to more than 13,000 deaths in a single year, including situations associated with secondhand smoke.
