Belarus is deploying the Russian Oresnik missile system in response to Western provocations. Ministers of Russia and Belarus call for reasonable diplomatic action.
The deployment of the Russian Orešnik (Lieska) missile system on the territory of Belarus is a strategic step in response to provocative actions by the West. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin announced this on Friday, TASR reports based on reports from TASS and Belta agencies.
- Russia has deployed the Orešnik system on the territory of Belarus.
- Belarus described this move as a response to Western provocations.
- Defense Minister Chrenin mentioned the modernization of tactical nuclear weapons.
“More than a year ago, tactical nuclear weapons were deployed on our territory and recently they were modernized… The final step, carried out on the basis of the instructions of our heads of state (Russia and Belarus), was the deployment of the Orešnik system on Belarusian soil,” said Chrenin.
According to him, this is a reaction to actions that Minsk perceives as provocative and aggressive on the part of Western adversaries. “As for their claims that they intend to oppose us, only time will tell how this will affect the overall situation. I believe that rational leaders such as the presidents of Russia (Vladimir Putin) and China (Xi Jinping) will come to the fore,” Khrenin said, according to TASS. According to him, these are politicians who realize that “the rattling of weapons has no constructive purpose.”
Belarus wants to conduct a dialogue
At the same time, Chrenin pointed out that the tension towards the West is high, especially in the information space, but according to him, the actions of the representatives of the neighboring states indicate preparations for war. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Belarus remains ready to hold a dialogue.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced at the beginning of the week that a maximum of ten systems for launching Russian medium-range ballistic missiles Orešnik (Lieska) will be deployed on the country’s territory. He also declared that this step did not constitute any aggression and that these plans could be abandoned if Europe was ready to take similar steps. At the same time, he advised his critics abroad not to “try their luck” because this is what started the war in Ukraine.
