Bodybuilding: See how Olympia was created – 12/26/2025 – Muscle

The Olympia is the most traditional and important bodybuilding championship in the world. Those who hold the title are considered not only the best athletes on the planet, but also ambassadors of their categories. Since 1965, the tournament in question has been promoted annually by the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB).

Created by Joe Weider, the competition aimed to bring together the best of the best. Putting the champions of Mr. America, Mr. Universe and Mr. World, which until then were the most difficult championships in the sport, to compete against each other.

Therefore, the Olympia —which had its name inspired by the Olympic ideal— already emerged as an exclusive tournament for athletes who had already become champions in other shows.

The creation of the event helped bodybuilding become increasingly professional and led to the emergence of several sporting idols, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman.

At the time it was created, the Olympia had only one category, which changed after the implementation of the women’s division in 1980. Since then, several new modalities have emerged and been included in the competition.

Currently, there are 11 categories present at the event.
