"I want to show my ethnic group that it can go further": young people from the Vale da Amoreira neighborhood make a short film

In Vale da Amoreira, in Moita, an inclusion project was created that has given new opportunities to dozens of young people. This year, they are making a short film.

Around 20 young people from the Vale da Amoreira neighborhood, in Moita – the municipality with the school with the lowest ranking in the national ranking – have participated in the production of a short film as actors, extras or other necessary roles. The project “Tes Talento?” It opens the door to new opportunities and the achievement of dreams.

“Being a gypsy, it’s difficult to go beyond what you are”says José Caramelo, a young resident of the Vale da Amoreira neighborhood. “The world, sometimes, is still a little closed in relation to our ethnicity. And I also want to show my ethnicity, my family, that it is possible to go further.”

“I always wanted to enter this world of cinema and theater, but I never felt prepared and I don’t think there was ever an opportunity”, says Fábio Sarrua, another young resident of Vale da Amoreira. “I’m loving this project, it’s been incredible for all of us. It’s been good for the neighborhood.”

Catarina Abrunhosa, who also lives in the neighborhood, highlights how she has “learned new things” and “worked with several professionals”.

Micaela Reis is the volunteer director and is heading the project for the first time.

“It’s been fantastic. We have a lot of talent here in Vale da Amoreira”, he points out.

Volunteers are guided by the expectation of helping young people find a path.

“That they, in some way, can take advantage of this project to develop skills and knowledge in the artistic area”, explains Abílio Marcos, coordinator of the Center for Artistic Experimentation, which organizes the project.

“And may we develop, through this project, social inclusion – which, in this territory, is very important”, highlights Sara Silva, vice-president of the Moita City Council. “It’s giving them responsibility and saying that we believe in them.

The second edition of “Tens Talento?” is still going on. There is post-production work that will be done so that the short film will soon be available.
