Israel was the first country in the world to recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent country. The opening of embassies and economic cooperation are part of the planned partnership.
Israel was the first country in the world to formally recognize the independence of the Republic of Somaliland – a breakaway region of Somalia. This was announced on Friday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, TASR writes, according to reports from Reuters and AFP and news websites Ynet and The Times of Israel (TOI).
“The Prime Minister today announced the official recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state,” the Prime Minister’s Office said, adding that he did so “in the spirit of the Abrahamic Accords.”
They will also open embassies
The joint declaration was signed by Netanyahu, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullah. Saar wrote on the X social network that embassies will be opened and ambassadors appointed in both countries.
More than thirty years after the breakaway of Somaliland from Somalia, Israel became the first country in the world to recognize it as an independent state. “We intend to cooperate in economic areas, in agriculture and in areas of social development,” Netanyahu said, adding that he invited Abdullah to make an official visit to Israel. Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and so far no member of the United Nations has recognized its statehood. However, for example, the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Kenya and Taiwan have their offices here.
