The city of São Paulo recorded, for the second consecutive day, the highest temperature of the year and also the new heat record for the month of December, according to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The Mirante de Santana station, in the north of the capital, reached 36.2 °C at 3 pm this Friday (26), surpassing the 35.9 °C recorded at 4 pm on Thursday (25), Christmas Day. Until then, the December record was 35.6 °C, recorded on December 3, 1998.

As a result, Friday became the hottest day of 2025 in the capital of São Paulo. Previously, the highest temperature of the year had been 35.1 °C, on October 6th. Although high, the mark is still below the city’s absolute record, of 37.8 °C, recorded on October 17, 2014. Other nearby historical highs occurred in October 2020, when thermometers reached 37.4 °C and 37.3 °C. In the state of São Paulo, the highest temperature ever recorded was 42.5 °C, in Catanduva, on October 7, 2020.

Given the persistence of the heat, Inmet issued a red alert — of great danger — for a heat wave until next Monday (29). The forecast indicates temperatures more than 5 °C above average, the effect of a hot and humid air mass over the Southeast. For the weekend, the initial forecast points to a maximum of 33 °C on Saturday (27) and 34 °C on Sunday (28), but values could rise as the heat wave continues. Isolated showers of rain are expected in the late afternoon and early evening, as has occurred in recent days.

According to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE), from São Paulo City Hall, the muggy weather is expected to persist until at least Tuesday. On Wednesday (31), the forecast indicates increased cloudiness, no rain and milder temperatures.

Inmet’s red alert also covers the entire state of Rio de Janeiro, the south of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, the east of Mato Grosso do Sul and the north of Paraná. In neighboring areas, there is a yellow alert for a heat wave, indicating the maintenance of high temperatures in the coming days.
