The city of São Paulo recorded this Thursday (25th), the Christmas holiday, the highest temperature ever observed for the month of December since the beginning of the consolidation of climate data. The thermometers registered 35.9 °C at 4 pm, at the Mirante de Santana meteorological station, in the north of the capital, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

The record was reached gradually throughout the afternoon. At 3 pm, the temperature reached 35.7 °C and, an hour later, it rose to 35.9 °C. Until then, the highest maximum recorded in December was 35.6 °C, measured on December 3, 1998. In addition to establishing a new monthly record, the mark is also the highest in 2025 in the capital of São Paulo. The hottest day of the year so far was recorded on October 6, when the temperature reached 35.1 °C.

The measurements were taken at the Mirante de Santana station, whose data consolidated by Inmet dates back to 1961, although records at the unit began in 1943. Inmet highlights that this is the highest December temperature in 64 years. In historical comparison, the highest temperature ever recorded in the state of São Paulo occurred in Catanduva, on October 7, 2020, when thermometers reached 42.5 °C. In the capital, the absolute record remains 37.8 °C, recorded on October 17, 2014, also at Mirante de Santana.

According to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) of São Paulo City Hall, the intense heat is caused by the action of a hot and humid air mass over the Southeast, associated with a heat wave that marks the first week of summer.

The forecast indicates continued hot weather over the next few days. This Friday (26), the morning should be sultry, with sun between few clouds at dawn. Air humidity can drop to around 32% in the hottest periods of the day, and isolated showers are expected from the afternoon onwards, due to the arrival of the sea breeze. On Saturday (27), the scenario remains similar, with a warm morning, sun throughout the day and isolated short-term rain in the afternoon and evening.
