Influencer Milan Bardún aka Milan Bez Mapy started a string of Christmas markets in different cities around the world last year in Paris, and this year it fell on New York. The seasoned traveler took to Instagram to document the stunning holiday decorations, cheer and, of course, the stall prices.
The price tag of the delicacy that Slovaks love caught his eye. “This is a SCANDAL. Do you know how they sell Slovak stuffed buns at Christmas markets in New York? Like ITALIAN DONUTS and they cost 7 dollars (approx. 6 euros). If my grandmother had known, she would have been the first to fry them there.” wrote Milan on Facebook. After an avalanche of comments, he tagged the sweet treat as donuts on Instagram.
Everyone knows that the real atmosphere of Christmas markets can be enjoyed in the dark, when everything is lit up, which brings a certain special charm. The steps of the well-known Slovak therefore headed between the stands again. In the evening, Milan was tempted by a waffle, which cost him dearly. “I’m going to eat a waffle for 13 dollars (more than 11 euros) and sleep,“ he announced to followers. He didn’t even miss a visit of the iconic Christmas tree in front of the Rockefeller Center building. The tradition began in 1931, during the Great Depression, when the center’s workers folded and bought a six-foot-tall fir tree, which they decorated with homemade paper garlands. Their goal was to bring at least a little joy to people in difficult times.
In 1933, the official lighting of the tree took place for the first time, and since then this event has become a popular custom. Everyone knows the place well from the movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
